Why is it hard for many people to do things for themselves before they do it for others? In our current culture, they may think they are doing the right thing, but in the end, it is they themselves that will suffer. And make no doubt about it, that suffering of the provider will manifest itself in the very people s/he are trying to support. This trend of unselfishness affects women more so than men as it is women that usually end up being the care provider to their husband, children, and in many cases later in life, to their parents or even in-laws. While admirable, it takes its toll on the provider. Not only should you as a provider put yourself before others, it is essential to do so. If you go down from lack of self-care, many others will suffer until you get back on your feet. Actually, the opposite is true – the better you take care of your own physical/mental and emotional needs first, the better you can care for others.
